MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State women’s tennis team will travel east to Huntington, W.Va., to kickoff their spring campaign with matches against Marshall and Eastern Michigan at the Huntington Tennis Center. The Eagles will battle the Thundering Herd on Friday Jan. 14 at Noon and square off against the Eagles on Sat. Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.
Based on a great fall season, the Eagles will look to build off the success of the 2009-10 team. MSU ended the regular season with a 6-3 record for a fourth place finish, and then went on to finish fifth at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. MSU returns six players and adds two newcomers. Leading the six returnees is 2010 Second-Team All-Conference performer
Madeleinne Antero. Antero recorded an overall record of 12-16 in singles play and finished 6-3 in OVC action.
Joining Antero is
Brooke Helms, who is coming off a fantastic freshman campaign. Helms finished 8-1 in OVC play and finished with a team best 18-15 overall record. Other returning Eagles include
Catherine Butts,
Lauren Delaney,
Alexandra Rydberg, and
Alix Young. The newcomers feature
Victoria Cran and
Jessica Montemayor.
Marshall is returning five players from last year’s squad which finished with an overall record of 19-7 and made a run to the Conference USA championship match.
Eastern Michigan finished with an 8-14 overall record last season, ending at 2-6 in Mid-American Conference play. The Eagles return Miriam Westerink who finished last season with a team best 22-12 record.
MSU's next match will be against Louisville on Jan. 23.
