MOREHEAD, Ky. – The women’s tennis team played outstanding as they cruised to victory 7-0 over Georgetown College (Ky.) in non-conference action at home in the Wellness Center. The Eagles improve to 2-7 overall and have won two of their last three matches. Georgetown drops to 0-2.
"We really stepped up our game today, the girls were able to take what we have been doing in practice and execute that out on the court," said coach
Kevin Fulton. "Our MVP today was
Alix Young as she did a great job in the one position winning in straight sets, while battling through some injuries."
Morehead State dominated from the get go as they swept the doubles. At number one the veteran tandem of
Madeleinne Antero and
Lauren Delaney fought hard and came away with an 8-7 victory over Adrienne Bartlett and Haley Hart.
Victoria Cran and
Jessica Montemayor rolled to victory over Emily Krick and Natalie Hill 8-1 in the two position and Young and
Alexandra Rydberg won big 8-0 over Shelby Eden and Rhyan Martin in the three spot.
With an early 1-0 lead heading into singles the Eagles used their momentum to keep the pressure on the Tigers. Morehead State didn’t lose one set on the afternoon as they won at every position. At the one spot Alix Young won over Bartlett 7-5, 6-4 and in the two position Rydberg beat Hart in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. At number three Antero conquered Krick 6-0, 6-0 and in the four position Delaney beat Hill 6-0, 6-3. Rounding out the great performance for the Eagles was
Brooke Helms and
Catherine Butts who also won big. Helms defeated Eden 6-2, 6-0 and Butts downed Mackenzie Hatfield 6-0, 6-1.
The Eagles will travel to the Show Me State on Feb. 19 to battle Ohio Valley Conference opponent Southeast Missouri for their first conference match of the season.
