MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Junior Victoria Cran and freshman Alexis Garrett both won singles and doubles matches to lead the Morehead State women's tennis team on the first day of the Illinois State Redbird Round-Up.
Cran and Garrett each won three-set singles matches over Illinois State players, and then the duo paired up to win their first doubles match of the Fall event. In her first collegiate season, Garrett has not lost a singles match yet, going 4-0, and she is also 3-1 in doubles.
"I was really pleased with our effort and our results today," said assistant coach Meg Rozboril, who is coaching the team this weekend. " We won our doubles matches against some very good opponents, and we're looking forward to tomorrow to see if we can keep up our success."
Garrett defeated ISU's Stefanie Young, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1, and Cran knocked off Redbird player Hannah Esker, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The pair also handed Butler's doubles pair of Cam Thompson and Karhfi King an 8-4 defeat.
Three other Eagle players, Alix Young, Jessica Montemayor and Shilpa Naruka dropped their first singles matches in straight sets, but Young and Montemayor responded with a win in doubles action.
They edged Illinois State tandem Esker and Heather Nesbit 8-5. Naruka also won a split-team doubles match paired with an Illinois State player.
The Eagles will continue action in various championship and consolation brackets through Sunday.
