EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Morehead State women’s basketball continues the Ohio Valley Conference’s Illinois road trip Monday night at SIU Edwardsville. Tipoff at the Cougars’ Vadalabene Center is slated for 8 p.m. ET, and the contest can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network and on www.MSUEagles.com.
MSU (7-15/4-6 OVC) dropped the first leg of the trip 78-58 Saturday at league-leader Eastern Illinois. After winning four of the first five OVC games, the Eagles are now mired in a five-game losing streak.
SIU Edwardsville has won six of its last seven games and improved to 8-3 overall in the league with a 64-53 triumph over Eastern Kentucky Saturday. Three players, Jazmin Hill (10.6 ppg), Raven Berry (10.3 ppg) and Katie Hempen (10.0 ppg) lead the Cougar offensive attack. SIUE also gets 8.9 rebounds per game from Berry and 8.0 per game from Michaela Herrod. The Cougars hit 40 percent from the field as a team and dish out 15 assists per game.
SIUE is in its first year playing a full OVC schedule, but the Cougars will still not be eligible for the postseason tournament until the 2012-13 season. Amanda Levens is in her fourth season as head coach with a 38-72 overall mark.
Morehead State got a breakout game from freshman forward Kristin Perry at EIU Saturday. She came off the bench late in the first half and proceeded to put together one of the best debut efforts for an MSU freshman in school history with 18 points in just 17 minutes. Senior guard Courtney Lumpkin, who averages 20 points in OVC games, hit her average with a team-high 20 markers.
MSU and SIUE have met four times in the past three seasons with each team winning twice. The teams split games last year with each winning on the other’s home court.
The Eagles will next travel to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 4 p.m. ET game.
