MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Facing a one-run deficit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, the Morehead State baseball team dropped game one with Eastern Kentucky, 5-4, Friday night at Allen Field.
The game was tied heading into the ninth inning, when freshman pinch runner TJ Alas came home on the last of four MSU errors to score the eventual game-winner.
“We’ve been struggling offensively, but today we made some errors that really cost us,” Head Coach Mike McGuire said. “We’ve just got to bounce back and play the defense I know that we are capable of tomorrow.”
EKU improved to 7-19 on the season and 3-7 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while MSU fell to 9-20 with the loss, and 4-9 in the OVC.
MSU senior left fielder Taylor Pickens came a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot.
The Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single from junior catcher Sean Hagen. The Eagles answered in the bottom half of the inning when Pickens crushed a solo shot over the centerfield wall, his first of the year.
Morehead State score two in the second to make it 3-1. The inning was highlighted by doubles from Pickens and senior catcher Drew Williams.
EKU scored one each in the third, fourth and fifth, while MSU drove in its final run of the contest on an RBI single from senior shortstop Chase Greenwell in the fourth.
Colonel sophomore right-hander Cody Creamer, who pitched three scoreless innings of the bullpen, picked up the win. MSU senior right-hander Morgan Cirbo, who gave up just one unearned run in 1.2 innings of relief, was charged with the loss.
The teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Weather permitting, the game will have live video through the OVC Digital Network.
