NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Â Morehead State women's tennis recorded back-to-back OVC wins with a 5-2Â triumph over Belmont on Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Sportsplex.
The Eagles (2-12, 2-2 Ohio Valley Conference) have won back-to-back matches for the first time this season and have evened up their conference record. The Bruins (2-10, 0-3) have dropped eight straight matches and remain winless in OVC play.
Morehead State collected all five points in the match in singles competition. Sophomore
Maria Orenella defeated Maddie Gilley in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, claiming the first point of the afternoon for the Eagles. Junior
Hayley Wild pushed the Eagles ahead, taking down Suzanna Stapler, 6-3, 7-6.
The day was won on the backs of senior
Ayaka Terashi, sophomore
Aleksandra Savic, and freshman
Zina Mehikic, each playing to three sets and claiming victories. Savic began her match with a first-set loss, 6-0, to Abbie Mather. She fought back, dismantling Mather 6-3 in the final two sets.
Mehikic had the same uphill climb, losing her first set 6-1 to Kendall Warren. She began her comeback in the second set with a 6-3 win, followed by a 6-2 victory in the third set to take the match.
Winning her first set 6-4, Terashi stumbled to a 6-2 loss in her second set to Laura Van Eeckhoudt. Terashi rallied back strong though as she played to 6-1 deciding-set win.
Morehead State will continue OVC play on Saturday against Jacksonville State.
