Howard Smith played basketball for Morehead State from 1963-67. Smith was a member of the famous “Birmingham Four” that was coached by Bob Wright at MSU.
Smith joined MSU in 1963-64, playing on the freshman team. He was elevated to the varsity team as a sophomore. He was known for his speed and was one of the fastest players on the team.
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Smith earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Morehead State. He also obtained a certificate in advanced study in education from UAB and doctoral studies at the University of Houston.
In addition to playing basketball for the Eagles, Smith played in the military (Special Forces of Seventh Army Division) and for the American Basketball Association (ABA) Kentucky Colonels. He was a also a member of the famed exhibition team the Harlem Globetrotters. Smith was active military for three years serving in Desert Storm and an Army Reservist for 19 years.
