Hopey Newkirk was a pioneer in women’s track and cross country at MSU, earning letters on MSU’s earliest teams in those sports. In 1979, she ran fifth as MSU won the first-ever OVC Women’s Cross Country Championship.

A competitive runner for much of her life, Newkirk has won many local and regional distance races and has competed in the Boston Marathon.
